Bantwal Baliga Family Tree

The Family

We, the Baligas of Bantwal, are among the prominent families of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin community. With Kashyap as our Gothra and Shri Damodar of Zambolim along with Shri Aryadurga of Ankola as our Kuladevathas, we follow the Madhva philosophy in our rituals and worship according to the Panchayatana (Five Deities) tradition.

Historical indicators suggest that our ancestors may have migrated to Bantwal between and , seeking either a respectable livelihood or promising trading opportunities. Research points to a possible connection with traders from Basrur, the historic port town near Kundapur—many of whom were Baligas.

The earliest recorded reference to a Bantwal Baliga is from , mentioning one Damarsa Bale, who is believed to be a 3rd or 4th generation descendant of the original family that settled in Bantwal. Our ritual records for Mahalaya Pithrukarya list Ramayya Bale as our earliest known ancestor.

Bantwal provided our forefathers the stability and confidence to establish prosperous trading activities. By the 19th century, members of the next generation began moving beyond Bantwal in pursuit of better opportunities and education. Today, our family is spread across the globe.

Changing Times, New Patterns

History tends to repeat itself—but with new patterns. In earlier times, there were Gadde Bales (land-owning families with paddy fields) and Pent-a-Bales (town-based families). Later, we saw Bank-a-Bales (bank employees) and Vyar-a-Bales (traders). Today, our family includes Foreign Bales living overseas and Domestic Bales living in India. In between, many have excelled in diverse professions.

Branches of the Bantwal Baliga Family

  1. Punjalkatte Baligas – Settled in Punjalkatte near Bantwal in the late 18th or early 19th century, thriving in trade. Their descendants are now spread worldwide.
  2. Maranakatte Baligas – Acquired land in Maranakatte (25 km from Bantwal) in the late 18th century. It is believed that the Punjalkatte Baligas originally came from here.
  3. Mavinkurve Baligas – Believed to be of Bantwal Baliga origin, though contact with the main family was lost in the early 19th century. Present-day families are found in Mangalore and Belgaum.
  4. Bale Bhats of Manjeshwar – During the time of Shri Bhuvanendra Theertha Swamiji, a Bantwal Baliga was appointed as a Bhat (assistant priest) at Manjeshwar Temple. His descendants came to be known as Bale Bhats, and are now settled in various parts of India and abroad.

One Lineage, Many Stories

Our family records largely trace the lineage of Ramayya Baliga, but there may be other distinct Bantwal Baliga lineages. Some Baligas who share our Gothra and Kuladevathas, and identify Bantwal as their place of origin, are not found in our recorded tree—yet they are undoubtedly part of the Bantwal Baliga heritage.

This website belongs to all Bantwal Baligas—especially those with Kashyap Gothra and Shri Damodar as Kuladev. We warmly invite everyone to join this effort by contributing their family details, so together we can preserve our shared history for future generations.
